IN YOUR OWN WORDS, (that is, without cutting and pasting ANYTHING, employing vocabulary and expressions common to high school students), provide for Mrs. Campbell answers to the questions listed below. Remember that you are writing to a PERSON, therefore sufficient explanation is needed with your detail. Do not assume she knows anything! Your responses will be graded according to accuracy of detail and quality/sincerity of expression.
  • Who is Bernadette Soubirous? (bio details, character sketch)
  • Where does she come from? (geo location, environment, etc.)
  • What happened on 11 February (1858) in her life? (NB: only 11 February)
  • What is your reaction to this event? NB: Imagine that it happened last year, and you're just learning about it now.

Have you heard??

So just recently, I found out that this one girl claims that she has these visions of the Blessed Mother at a nearby grotto. It's becoming quite a commotion

The girl's name is Bernadette Soubirous. I believe she's from Lourdes, France. She just turned 15 on January 7. You probably haven't heard about her since she comes from a very poor and humble family. Her father is a miller and her mother, a laundress. The poor women gave birth to 9 children. Three of whom didn't make it through their infancy.

Well the story goes that February 11th of last year, she, her sister and a friend, went out to gather wood at the grotto of Massabielle on the outskirts of Lourdes. It is said that this is where she had
the first of the 18 apparitions she claims to have had. She claims to have seen a "small young lady". Both her sister and her friend did not see what had not seen what she had. I heard that this "lady" asked her to continue to come to the grotto for a while. Can you believe it? She had 18 visions of the Virgin Mary. However, she did not know who she was until she identified herself as the Immaculate Conception to her. It is said that Bernadette had never heard this term be used to describe the Blessed Mother which kind of changed the mind of those who were skeptical of her visions.

Personally, I believe Bernadette's visions foreshadow a future vocation in the religious life. These miraculous wonders happen for a reason. I am still left in awe with the fact that this happened to a youth such as herself.

hey,
guess what? I heard that a girl was having visions at a grotto of Mary the Mother of God. I think this is so cool. I will tell you what I have found out.

This girl is named Bernadette and she's from Lourdes, France, I think, she is poor but very holy. Which is pretty cool if you ask me. And the sad part is she tried haveing kids but she lost 3 of 9. That is so sad.

And on February 11, Bernadette went to Massabille with a few friends and Bernadette said that she see's a young women but her friends did not see anything. Then Bernadette said that this lady told her to come see her and she went i think about..umm..oh, 18 times.

I think that is alot. And to see someone she really didnt know. But I bet that she had a good feeling about this Lady.

Bonjour Mme Campbell!

Okay Mrs. Campbell! Are you ready for this crazy crazy story? Im pretty sure you already know everything there is to know about Saint Benadette because, i mean you ARE Mrs. Campbell. But Mme. Strafaci told us to tell you about it all over again. SPLENDED!!

Where to start? Saint Bernadette Soubirous was from the town of Lourdes in southern France. She was born on January 7, 1844, and died April 16, 1879. On December 8,1933, she became a saint of the Raman Catholic Church.
After her death, her body remained the same exact way as it was from when she died. In other words, her body never decayed. Later on, she basically became a museum attraction for pilgrimage at the shrine at Lourdes.

On February 11th, she, her sister, and a friend where out at the grotto of Massabielle. On this day was when she had the first of 18 apperances of "a lady". Her sister and friend did not see the vision, so immediently they both did not believe Bernadette.
WOW! Just this everyday woman had 18 visions of The Blessed Mother. Hard to believe when you come right down to it.

Honestly, I would not believe Bernadette if she told me the same thing. For example, if one of my friends came up to me and was like, "Hey Victoria! Guess what? I saw Oprah sitting at my dinner table...18 times!"
.......ehh hem. First i would probably laugh, tell them they were crazy, then probably suggest medication. Don't lie! You were thinking the same thing.

Okie Dokie Mrs. Campbell, there you have my version of Saint Bernadette's life. Hope you enjoyed it!

P.S. Please tell Mme. Strafaci to give me an A. Thanks!!

Hey Mrs.Campbell,
Guess what i just recently found out?
Bernadette Soubirous is a young girl born in Southern France, daughter of Francois and Louise Soubirous. Bernadette was the eldest child out of six children in her family. She was baptized at St. Pierre's church,on January 9th(her parents anniversary).

Bernadette's family lived in poverty, having a small room being shared by them all. The Soubirous family lived by relying on each other with their love and support, and also with their religious beliefs.

On February 11, Bernadette at 14years old, went with her sister and her friend to gather firewood at the Grotto of Massabielle. Mrs. Campbell that is where it is said bernadette had her first vision with the Mother of God. Bernadette described her as "a small young lady".The total of her visions were 18. By the 17th vision, the towns people assumed it to be her,Virgin Mary. Bernadette described her wearing a white veil,a blue girdle and was wearing a golden rose on each foot. It is said that the Virgin was holding a Rosary.

I would say to this situation is that Bernadette is very lucky to have that communication with the mother of God. It would be a pleasure being chosen by God to do a good deed. At first i think i would be very confused, as in there only illusions or reality. At first might be treated as crazy by the people around you, but only you would know if you have been chosen.

Hey have u heard?

Have you heard about Bernadette Soubirous, and her visions she has had of the blessed mother? Probably not, well let me tell you about her.

Bernadette was born January seventh, in the town of Lourdes in southern France. She is the daughter of Francois(who is a miller)and Louise(who is a laundress)Soubirous. She is the eldest of six out of the nine children that survived infancy.

Bernadette was baptized in the local parish church St.Pierre. She was baptized january ninth, wich was also her parents wedding anniversary. Bernadette's godmother was Bernarde Casterot, who was the sister of her mother Louise.

Bernadette's family lived in extreme poverty. The family got on with their lives by depending on their love and support on one another. Bernadette's family was so poor that the whole family had to share one room.

On febuary eleventh Bernadette , her sister and a friend were out gathering firewood. this would be the day that changed bernadette's life and the town of Lourdes. You see this would be the day that Bernadette started having one of the eighteen visions she had of the Virgin Mary.

Bernadette had no idea it was the Virgin Mary. She would identify her as a small young lady. Bernadette said that the lady had told her to return to the grotto every day for fifteen days. The lady did finally reveal herself for who she really was. On the seventeenth vision she identified herself.

Mrs. Campbell!! I have to tell you about what I just heard! I didn't believe it at first until I looked it up more on the internet. So apparently, last year on February 11th, a 14 year old girl named Bernadette Soubirous went out to gather fire wood at a grotto in Lourdes. It was there and on that day she had visions of what she said looked like a "lady." This "beautiful lady" turned out to be the Immaculate Conception! That's Mary, the Mother of Jesus! Mary revealed her name to Bernadette after the 17th apparition to her. On that day Bernadette saw the Lady a total of 18 times!
This is all big news. It's still hard to comprehend. Bernadette Soubirous is just a poor girl born on January 7, 1844 living in poverty in the rural area of France. From what I've learned about Bernadette, I can sort of see why Mary chose to appear to her. Bernadette's family is said to survive on love and support from one another and devotion to religion in their harsh circumstances.
Personally, I think it's outstanding that Mary appeared to her. These days it's so rare to hear about these kinds of apparations. It's all very interesting.

Face-to-Face with Mrs. Campbell.(Skit)
{I have decided to speak with Mrs. Campbell in her office. Now all I have to do is go in with confidence and speak with her.}
"Mrs. Campbell? Hi, I am sorry to bother you but you are new to our St. Mary's staff and I wanted to welcome you." She smiled and I sat before her. "Anyway, I was very impressed with the speech about your life that you gave to our class. You said that when you were little you had an encounter with the Virgin Mary. Then as an adult you had another encounter and this was a sign for you to become Catholic. Well, I heard that a girl in Lourdes, France by the name of Bernadette Soubirous had an encounter with Mary also. Bernadette is apart of a poor family but they work together to live humbly with what they have. Last year, on February 11th, Bernadette was out with her sister and a friend to get some wood. They came to the foot of a hill called Massabielle. Bernadette's sister and friend came upon a passageway of water and they crossed it to look for the wood. Bernadette was left by the grotto of Massabielle. She was about to cross the water but was distracted by a strong wind. She turned and saw the Lady. This lady was dressed in white and she was making signs for Bernadette to approach her.
Like you, Mrs. Campbell, Bernadette was afraid. She got her rosary and began to pray. Then, the lady disappeared. As Bernadette got up, she immediately crossed the waters and met up with the other girls. She asked if they saw anything and they replied no." Mrs. Campbell was curious to find out more. She wanted to know MORE? I thought so I continued, "Bernadette was born on January 7th. Actually, three days before your birthday, Mrs. Campbell. Anyway, it is just so amazing to tell this story. Bernadette hardly could read and write but she had faith in God. I just want to say even if it is somewhat crazy to see and be in the presence of someone so holy like the Mother of God and you feel so unworthy later you will be worthy enough to tell your story to others even if some don't believe you. Like Bernadette, it only matters that you keep that experience genuine just like the belief of God. I believe in the Lady, even though I haven't seen her. Good day, Mrs. Campbell."

On February 11, 1858 Bernadette began to have her first apparations of mary.

My reaction to this event is that it is very interesting, this would be because i have never heard this story. Also because it is interesting to hear that someone aactually had an encounter with mary.

Mrs. Campbell its me Andrew! i know im your favorite student and all, and im always getting yelled at about my hood or sleeping in class but to make it up i thought i share some really flabbergasting news ive discovered!

So while i was doing some reserach i found some good on facts on Saint bernadette of lourdes who was born on January 7, 1844.Her full name is Maria Bernada Soubirous.Lourdes is her hometown located in south france where she was riased and cared for by her two parents Francois Soubirous and louise. She was baptized in a local parish church named after St. pierre. Thats just facts that got me hooked Mrs. Campbell, oooh do i have much more to tell you.

So i hope you havent forgotten my brithday is on Febuary 11, which reminds me of something i scammed over while reseraching Bernadette. I read that she had a vesion when she was just 14 years old and claimed to her mother that she had seen a lady in a cave, in Massabielle, its about one mile from lourdes. She was with her sister and a friend seeking firewood when they came to a stream they had to cross. She pasued to take off her stockings when she heard a noise, she turned her head and saw a lady dresse in white with a blue gridle and a yellow rose on her foot. Catholics after hearing this story beleave that she had seen the virgin Mary. Isnt that super crazy Mrs. Campbell?

How would you react to something like this Mrs. Camobell? Well the way i feel is that she really did see Mary. Theirs no doubt in my mind, i just wish we all could she things like that. Seeing something like that could really change peoples live's. This happen just last year and i cant beleave ive just now discovered it. I know your a theology teacher and all, but i though id share this with you. It really makes me think, and it gives me faith.

Alright well ill see you around.

Sincerely, Andrew

Mrs. Campbell!
Are you ready to hear this jolly good story!? It’s about a girl who was born to be the daughter of Francis and Louise Soubirous on January 7, 1844. She grew up in the city of Lourdes, France, who lived in a miserable state of poverty. From the age of six she showed symptoms of the respiratory ailment that later became a chronic disorder. It was not clear then that at that early stage whether she suffered from asthma or tuberculosis.
In just fourteen years after her birth she had a miraculous religious experience. As she was sent out to collect some firewood with her sister and friend, her life had been brightened. On that day of February 11, 1858 in the grotto called Massabiell, the young girl first heard a gust of wind blow; she turned and then witnessed a lovely lady dressed in blue and white with bright gold roses covering her feet. The lady smiled at her and then made the sign of the cross with a rosary. As surprised as the girl was, she immediately fell onto the floor and began to pray the rosary. Would you believe who the surprising guest to Sister Mary Bernard was? The beautiful lady was the Blessed Virgin Mary. “The Lady let me pray alone; she passed the beads of the rosary between her fingers, but said nothing; only at the end of each decade she did say the Gloria with me” St. Bernadette excitedly told her friends after the vision. She asked her friends not to tell anyone about it but that same night they told her parents and rumors began to go around about everything that happened. Our Lady of Lourdes had twelve visions of the Blessed Mother in all.
I was really amazed to hear about this story! I don’t really who how I would have reacted to a gust of wind but I hope that I would react in a similar way to St. Bernadette Soubirous’s. I would probably be afraid because I was being chosen but full of surprise and happiness inside, like a really bright light bulb! But if my friends came to me to tell me I probably wouldn’t really believe them, unless it was Jannette, I would probably ask them to stop the drugs they started using or prescribe some medication for them.
Wouldn’t you totally agree with me on that one?
Well I hope you enjoyed a nice short un-plagiarized story about a fascinating young lady that was lucky enough to experience the love of Mary on earth!
*Oh and by the way, I write biographies about random people ALL THE TIME, so you maybe receiving many of these surprising emails from me!*

Bernadette soubrious also known as st. bernadette after her cannonization in 1933 by pope pius the 6th, was the daughter of francois and Louise soubirous. Bernadette was the eldest of six surviving childeren, her mother had given birth to nine childeren. but un fortunatly four of her mothers childeren died of childhood diseases or perhaps at birth. Bernadette was baptized on the ninth of January at St.Pierres church, wich was thier local church parish. her family lived in poverty, but after the hard times had fallen apon France, her family also ended up fallin into extreme poverty. Yet The family was still rich and love, support for one another, and in a religious way as well.
On February 11th of the year 1859 Bernadette was only fourteen years old. At this age she, her sisters and her friend would set out to the grotto of Massabielle outside of Lourdes to gather firewood for the family when on that day she had her 1st vision of the virgin mary. She claimed to have seen her standing in a miche in a rock, but her sisters and friend said other wise. Bernadette said that "The beautiful lady", in other words the virgin mary, asked Bernadette to return to the grotto everyday for fiffteen strait days. Her mother forbid her from going until Bernadette persuade her mom in allowing to go to the grotto. Bernadette described the lady as wearing a white viel, a blue gridle and had a golden rose on each foot as well, and was holding a string of rosary beeds in her hand.
At 1st I couoldn't believe this that a young girl saw our holy mother and got a chance to talk to her. Bernadette had not one vision but eightteen visions in total. The towns people were divided in two, on whether Bernadette was telling the truth or if she was lying. Then soon many people from the town followed her to the grotto everyday, some did it out of curiosity and others believed that they were witnessing a miracle. Still this even was mind blowing eventhough its still queit believable im more than posotive that Bernadette Soubirous saw our holy lady.

Dear Mrs. Campbell,
What has happened to Bernadette Soubirous has really had an impact on my life. I don't know if you heard a lot about what really happened but, Bernadette Soubirous is a young girl from Lourdes in France. She was 14 at the time and on February 14th something amazing happened to her. She was out with her sister when she saw a "beautiful lady". Her sister said that she had seen nothing but Bernadette knew she was there and she was asked to revisit the grotto for 15 days. This beautiful lady was the Blessed Mother. I knew that people had visions about the holy family I just didn’t know that those people included girls around my age, younger then me actually. It just seems really crazy that of all the people in the world to appear to the Blessed Virgin chose a 14 year old girl. I guess in a way it gives me hope to know that it's not always adults and martyrs that receive these visions. I hope that one day I can prove myself to be trustworthy enough for her to visit me too. I do wonder though why Bernadette was so worthy. Did she pray more then other people? Was she more selfless then other people? Oh well I guess I’m a little envious. Just knowing that this has happened to her gives me hope that one day it might happen to me too. I wonder if she will get anymore visits from the Blessed Mother.

Sincerely,
Carly Marshall
